JPG, PNG and WebP explained

Each of the three web image formats was designed for a different job, and knowing the strengths of each makes the choice easy. JPG (or JPEG) uses lossy compression tuned for photographs. It produces small files and works in every app, camera and form ever made, but it cannot store transparency and re-saving it repeatedly slowly degrades the image.

PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel perfectly and supports transparent backgrounds. That makes it ideal for logos, icons, screenshots and any graphic with sharp edges or text — but the files are large for photographs. WebP, developed by Google, combines the best of both: photo-grade compression that is smaller than JPG, plus PNG-style transparency. It is supported by all modern browsers.

Which format should you convert to?

Match the format to where the image will live:

• Convert to WebP for images on your own website — smaller files mean faster pages and lower bandwidth.
• Convert to JPG for anything that must work everywhere: email, forms, older software, or a photo you will print.
• Convert to PNG when you need a transparent background, or lossless quality for a logo, screenshot or diagram.
• Going from PNG to JPG or WebP is the usual move when a photo-heavy PNG is simply too large to upload.

Transparency and batch conversion

One thing to remember when converting to JPG: because JPG has no concept of transparency, any see-through areas are filled with a solid white background. If keeping transparency matters — say for a logo that sits on a coloured page — convert to PNG or WebP instead. The converter handles this automatically so you never end up with ugly black boxes where the transparency was.
