Aspect ratios explained

An aspect ratio is simply the relationship between width and height. A 1:1 ratio is a perfect square, used everywhere for avatars and grid posts. 4:3 is the classic photo shape from older cameras and is still common for prints. 16:9 is widescreen — the shape of video thumbnails, presentation slides and most screens.

Snapping to a preset ratio guarantees the result fits its destination without any awkward letterboxing or cropping by the platform later. If you need a shape that is not a standard ratio, just drag the handles freely to any size — the presets are a shortcut, not a limit.

Crop versus resize

It is worth being clear about the difference, because reaching for the wrong tool leads to distorted images. Cropping keeps every pixel at its original quality and simply discards the area outside your selection — the image gets smaller in coverage, not in resolution. Resizing keeps the whole picture but rescales it to different pixel dimensions.

If you want a square from a rectangular photo, crop it — resizing would squash the picture out of shape. If you want the same photo at a smaller pixel size, resize it. Many workflows use both: crop to frame the subject, then resize the crop to the exact dimensions you need.
