A watermark protects your photos from being reused without credit and brands your work with a name, website or copyright notice. Our free watermark tool overlays custom text on your image — you control the wording, size, colour, opacity and position — then lets you download the marked version.

It is great for photographers, sellers and creators who want to label proofs and product shots. As with every Tooljar tool, the watermark is applied in your browser, so your original photo is never uploaded.

Why watermark your images

Once a photo is online, it is trivially easy for anyone to save and reuse it. A watermark will not physically stop that, but it does three valuable things: it credits you as the creator wherever the image travels, it discourages casual theft because removing a well-placed mark is a hassle, and it advertises your name or website to everyone who sees the picture.

That is why watermarks are standard practice for photographers sharing proofs, online sellers protecting product shots, designers posting portfolio pieces, and anyone sending a preview of paid work. The mark says clearly: this is mine, and here is where to find more of it.

Designing an effective watermark

A good watermark is a balance. Too faint and it is easily cropped or cloned out; too heavy and it ruins the image you are trying to show off. The controls here let you tune that balance precisely:

• Text — keep it short: a name, a handle, or a website is more memorable than a full sentence.
• Opacity — a semi-transparent mark around 40–60% is visible without dominating the photo.
• Size and colour — pick a colour that contrasts with the image so the mark stays legible on both light and dark areas.
• Position — a corner is subtle and professional; across the centre is far harder to remove but more intrusive.

Where to place a watermark

Placement is a trade-off between protection and looks. A small mark tucked into a corner keeps the image clean and is perfect for portfolios and social posts where the main goal is credit. The downside is that a corner is the easiest part to crop away, so it offers the least protection against a determined thief.

For proofs and preview images where protection matters more than beauty — think wedding galleries or stock previews — placing a larger, semi-transparent mark across the middle of the image makes it genuinely difficult to reuse without leaving obvious traces. Choose based on whether you are mainly building your brand or mainly guarding the file.
