Fixing common orientation problems

Wrong orientation is one of the most frequent little annoyances in digital photos, and it usually has nothing to do with how you took the shot. A scanner might feed a document in upside down, a phone might not record which way it was held, or a form might display your photo rotated because it ignored the camera’s orientation data.

Whatever the cause, the fix is the same handful of operations. Rotating 90° clockwise or anticlockwise handles sideways and upside-down images, while mirroring corrects the reversed look you sometimes get from front-facing selfie cameras or when scanning the back of a page.

Rotate versus flip

Rotating and flipping look similar but do different things, and choosing the right one matters. Rotation spins the whole image around its centre in 90° steps — text stays readable, it just points a different way. Flipping mirrors the image across an axis, so left becomes right (horizontal flip) or top becomes bottom (vertical flip). After a horizontal flip, any text in the image reads backwards.

Use rotation to fix a photo that is lying on its side or standing on its head. Use a horizontal flip to un-mirror a selfie so it matches how you actually look, or to face a subject the other way in a layout. A vertical flip is rarer but handy for correcting a reflection or an upside-down scan.

Why some photos look sideways (EXIF)

Cameras and phones store a small orientation tag, called EXIF orientation, that tells software which way to display a photo. Most apps read it and rotate the image for you, but some websites, email clients and upload forms ignore the tag — so a photo that looks upright on your phone suddenly appears sideways after uploading.

Rotating the image here bakes the correct orientation into the actual pixels rather than relying on a tag that might be ignored. That means once you download the fixed version, it will display the right way up everywhere, no matter how the destination handles metadata. And because a 90° rotation just rearranges pixels, there is no loss of quality.
