The best sizes for WhatsApp
WhatsApp does not publish strict dimensions, but a few sizes work reliably because they match how the app displays images:
- Profile photo (DP) — a square around 640×640 pixels; WhatsApp crops it to a circle, so keep your face centred.
- Status image — 1080×1920 pixels (9:16) fills the screen top to bottom like a story.
- Shared photos — resizing to around 1600px on the long side keeps quality high while staying light.
Getting a crisp, well-framed DP
The profile photo is the trickiest because WhatsApp displays it as a circle cropped from a square. If you upload a tall or wide photo, the app squeezes it into a square first and then masks it to a circle, which can cut off the top of a head or push a face to the edge.
Resizing to a proper square such as 640×640 with your subject centred means the circle lands exactly where you want it. If your original is not square, crop it to a square around your face first, then resize — that two-step approach gives the cleanest DP.
Why WhatsApp photos sometimes look blurry
WhatsApp compresses images aggressively to save data, and that compression is harshest on very large files — the app has more to throw away, so more detail is lost.
