The signature upload is the fiddliest part of most online forms. A photo of your signature straight from a phone is a megabyte or more, while the form wants a small JPG — often just 10 KB to 20 KB. This page is set up to take that photo or scan and bring it down to the required size while keeping the strokes clean and legible.

Because a signature is mostly white paper with thin dark lines, it compresses beautifully — a small max width and a moderate quality reliably land it in the 10–20 KB range. Everything runs in your browser, so your signature is never uploaded to a server.

What forms expect from a signature

Signature requirements are remarkably consistent across exam boards and government portals, and knowing them upfront prevents a rejected upload:

• Format — JPG/JPEG almost always; this tool outputs JPG by default.
• File size — commonly 10 KB to 20 KB, sometimes up to 30 KB.
• Dimensions — often a wide, short shape (for example around 140×60 to 300×80 pixels).
• Background — a clean white background with the signature in dark ink.

Why signatures compress so easily

A signature is the ideal candidate for compression. Most of the image is a single flat colour — white paper — with just a few thin strokes of dark ink. Compression formats store large areas of uniform colour extremely efficiently, so a signature drops to a tiny file long before the strokes start to degrade.

That means you can keep the quality reasonably high and still hit 10–20 KB, which keeps the lines smooth rather than jagged. The main lever is the max width: a signature does not need to be more than about 300–400 pixels wide to look crisp on a form, and trimming the width is what brings the size down to the target.

Getting a clean scan first

The quality of the final file depends a lot on the original capture. Sign with a dark pen on plain white paper, fill a good portion of the space, and photograph or scan it straight-on in even light. Avoid shadows across the paper and keep the camera parallel so the signature is not skewed.

If your capture has a slightly grey or uneven background, JPG output places it on white, which usually reads fine on a form. Should the form also demand exact pixel dimensions, set the max width to match those pixels, then lower the quality to meet the KB limit — the resize and compression happen together in this one tool.
